How to play
Players take turns dropping a disc into one of seven columns. Each disc falls to the lowest available space. Connect four of your discs horizontally, vertically, or diagonally before your opponent does.
Tips for winning
Central columns belong to more potential winning lines and are especially valuable. Create multiple threats at once, and always check whether your move gives the opponent an immediate win.
Connect Four strategy: plan around gravity
Discs always fall to the lowest free space, so recognizing a useful target cell is not enough. You must also plan when that cell becomes playable and which player will be able to use it.
Support cells determine timing
A higher winning cell can only be played after every space below it is occupied. Before each move, identify whose disc will provide the final support. A harmless-looking low move may make the opponent’s winning cell available on the next turn.
The center column is more valuable
The center can participate in more horizontal and diagonal lines of four than an edge. Early central control therefore offers flexible continuations. It is not always the correct move, but among equally safe choices, stronger central connections usually have more potential.
Create a playable winning cell
Three connected discs are a threat only if the fourth space can actually be played on the next turn. Pay special attention to open ends of horizontal lines and supports under diagonals. A line aimed at an unreachable cell may look impressive but does not force a response.
Prepare two winning continuations
A forced win is often created by threatening immediate victory in two different columns. This position must be prepared several moves ahead while tracking move parity. If the opponent blocks either column, the other remains open.
Check the level above before blocking
Blocking an enemy threat may be mandatory, but inspect what becomes playable directly above your disc. Your block can support a new attack on the next level. A safe defense stops the current line without giving away the next winning cell.
