Play Reversi online with a friend or computer
Play Reversi online against a friend or a computer opponent with three difficulty levels. It is quick to learn and full of strategic reversals.
How to play
Players alternate placing black and white discs on an 8×8 board. A move is legal when it traps one or more opposing discs between the new disc and another disc of your color; the trapped discs flip. A player with no legal move passes. The player with more discs at the end wins.
Tips for winning
Corner discs can never be flipped and are especially valuable. Do not count only the discs gained immediately: a move that leaves your opponent fewer options is often stronger.
Reversi: playing on TableDuel
What is different about this version?
On the 8×8 board, a move is legal only if it traps and flips at least one opposing disc. If you have no legal move, the game passes your turn automatically. The game can finish with empty cells remaining if neither side can move. Whoever has more discs at the end wins.
A decision worth thinking through
In the opening position, the first player can place a disc on C4 to trap the opposing disc on D4 against their own disc on E4. D4 then flips. Later, count more than the discs gained immediately: a large capture that gives away a corner can be worse than a smaller, safer move.
Reversi strategy: corners, mobility, and the endgame
A temporary disc lead can be misleading in Reversi. Stable positions and future legal moves often matter more than a large early capture.
Stay flexible in the opening
Do not chase the largest flip early. Keep your position compact and consider how many legal replies your move gives the opponent.
Corners are permanently safe
A disc in a corner cannot be trapped. Avoid the dangerous squares next to an empty corner because they often let your opponent take it.
Limit the opponent’s mobility
Mobility is the number of legal moves available. Prefer moves that preserve several continuations for you while leaving the opponent few good choices.
Count precisely in the endgame
When few empty squares remain, calculate several moves ahead. Even and odd empty regions, together with forced passes, can decide who places the final discs.
