How to play

Early in the game, many lines look neutral. Later, one edge can decide an entire chain of boxes. Good strategy connects safe opening play with accurate counting in the endgame.
Look for safe edges
An edge is usually safe when it does not create a box with three sides, ready for immediate capture. Use these moves first in the opening. Do not inspect only one box: an edge can change the status of two neighboring boxes at once.
The third side gives away a point
When a box has three sides, the opponent completes the fourth side, scores, and moves again. One poorly timed edge can therefore give away several connected boxes, not just one. Trace the full possible chain before drawing a third side.
Recognize chains
A chain forms when several boxes are connected so that captures can be forced in sequence. The player who must open it often concedes many points. Before the endgame, count long and short chains instead of watching only the current score.
A small sacrifice can be useful
Not every offered point is a mistake. Giving away a few boxes can force the opponent to open the next, longer chain, leaving you better off overall. Evaluate a sacrifice together with the forced sequence that follows it.
Count ahead in the endgame
Once safe edges are gone, the board structure largely determines the remaining points. Count who must open each chain and how many boxes can be handed over deliberately. A temporary lead matters less than controlling the final large chain.
